Keeping the Underground Spirit Alive
About Crazy Mary
Crazy Mary carries the torch for a time when downtown Manhattan thrived at its post-punk peak—gritty, smart, artful, edgy, and unapologetically raw. Before gentrification reshaped the landscape, this was a city fueled by fearless creativity and underground rebellion. True to the ideals of the era that shaped them, Crazy Mary remains deeply engaged with the present, rejecting nostalgia in favor of evolution.
Their latest EP, Onto Your Plane (Humsting Records, 2024), introduces a bold new chapter. With the powerful vocals of new frontwoman Zandrina Stewart, the band explores deeper realms of R&B, soul, and funk, while still delivering the psychedelic, experimental twists that define their sound.
A Legacy of Defiant Sound
Founded in 1998 by guitarist and songwriter Charles Kibel and drummer Nick Raisz, Crazy Mary has built a rich discography with eleven studio albums and two remix releases. Their music has received critical praise from The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Village Voice, and even NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams.
They’ve made their mark on festival stages, performing at CMJ, the Howl Festival, the Midpoint Music Festival, and more. In 2016, 2017, and 2018, Aquarian Weekly named them one of New York City’s top 30 live bands. Their reputation extends beyond NYC, with standout performances at:
Hollywood’s legendary Whisky A Go Go, sharing the stage with Iron Butterfly
The Mau Mau in London, UK, headlining The Portobello Festival
Las Vegas’ infamous Double Down Saloon
With a relentless passion for live performance, Crazy Mary continues to captivate audiences with their electrifying stage presence.
The Band
As longtime vocalist Emma Z returned to Australia to raise her son, the band welcomed the powerhouse vocals of Zandrina Stewart. A longtime collaborator, Zandrina had previously contributed backup vocals to the band—now, her soulful, commanding presence takes center stage, bringing a fresh yet timeless energy to the music.
